This is plov. A mixture of meat, onions, carrots, rice, and oil. Lots and lots of oil.

That may not sound like an incredibly appetizing mixture of ingredients, and with other cooking methods it may not be. However, when the cooking process is drawn out over hours all the component flavors meld and blend together. The rice gets an amazingly savory flavor and becomes delightfully chewy because it is added at the very end and simply soaks up the juices of the other long cooking ingredients.

Plus, plov is romantic. Maybe not to everyone, in Russia and the former soviet states it a fairly every day dish, but for me it is a labor of love for a husband who loves all things foreign and especially all things Russian. And I discovered it on Valentines day. How much more romantic can you get?
